What is torque? How to calculate the maximum torque when selecting a hinge?
Torque describes the amount of rotational force exerted on an object, usually in Newton meters (Nm). Measuring torque is an important step to ensure the correct installation and use of hinges. Tai Sam damping hinge products are used on the box cover in the picture below. The following formula can be used to calculate the required torque.
(Assume that the center of gravity of the door is the geometric center point of the L size)
Torque Calculation Formula
- Maximum torque T = L / 2 * W (weight) kg * 9.8 (N)
- (Example) When L=0.5M; W=3kg
- Maximum torque T=0.5/2*3*9.8=7.35N.m
When selecting a damped torque hinge, you can consider torque based on the following principles:
- Load requirements: First, you need to consider the size and type of load the hinge needs to bear. Different application scenarios may require hinges with different bearing capacities, so a suitable hinge needs to be selected based on load requirements.
- Movement requirements: If the hinge is used in situations that require frequent opening and closing, the impact of its torque on movement needs to be considered. Choosing a hinge with the proper torque ensures smooth and stable opening and closing.
- Environmental factors: Certain environments may have a special impact on the hinge's torque requirements, such as high temperature, humidity or corrosive environments. The hinge's torque characteristics may need to be considered to ensure its normal operation.
Considering that the damping torque has an allowable error of +/-20%, you can choose to install 2pcs of CL-209-2R-L .
